BREAKING: The new NDIS™️ Legislation has dropped!
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has finally announced details of the new legislation.
You may or may not have received an SMS from the NDIS™️ about the new legislation coming into effect tomorrow, 3 October 2024. This is part of a major reform announced by outgoing NDIS Minister Bill Shorten, aimed at clarifying what the NDIS will and won’t fund.
The changes introduce an official list of excluded items and services that will no longer be supported by the NDIS. These include:
- Drugs and alcohol
- Sexual services
- Rent, food, and holidays
- Lifestyle treatments such as tarot card readings, reiki, hypnotherapy, sound healing, somatic therapy, cuddle therapy, and wilderness therapy
- Mainstream services such as homeschooling and prescription drugs available through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS)
As Minister Shorten stated, "At long last, there will now be a central list of what NDIS participants can spend their money on and what they can’t spend their money on."
For more detailed information, you can review the official announcements here:
-
NDIS Minister’s Announcement on the reform, including the official lists of what the NDIS will and won’t fund: NDIS Support Lists - NDIS.gov.au (NDIS).
-
NDIS Legislation Updates, detailing the changes brought by the "Getting the NDIS Back on Track No. 1" Bill: Changes to the NDIS Act - DSS.gov.au (Department of Social Services).
-
Full List of Excluded NDIS Supports, providing clarity on what items are no longer supported, such as sexual services, drugs, holidays, and certain lifestyle treatments: NDIS Guidelines on Excluded Supports (NDIS).
Our best tip is to seek legal and compliance advice as you get your head around the changes, on very short notice from DSS and NDIS, about what services NDIS providers can provide, and what is no longer supported, and the impact to participants, carers and your business.
